Incoloy 801 & 802: Properties and Applications
Incoloy alloys are a group of nickel-chromium-iron alloys used for high-temperature applications in various industries, such as chemical processing, power generation, aerospace, marine, and oil and gas. In this blog, we will discuss the properties and applications of two popular Incoloy alloys: Incoloy 801 and Incoloy 802.
Incoloy 801
Incoloy 801, also known as UNS Designation N08801, is a solid-solution-strengthened nickel-iron-chromium alloy with high resistance to oxidation and corrosion. It has a maximum operating temperature of 1100°C (2000°F) and is commonly used in the following environments:
- Chemical processing: Incoloy 801 is resistant to various acids, such as sulfuric, hydrochloric, and nitric acid. It is used for processing equipment, such as heat exchangers, reaction vessels, and piping systems.
- Power generation: Incoloy 801 is used for high-temperature components in gas turbine engine exhausts, heat recovery steam generators, and boilers.
- Aerospace: Incoloy 801 is used for engine and exhaust components, such as afterburner liners, ducting, and thrust vector control.
- Marine: Incoloy 801 is used for seawater cooling systems, piping, and heat exchangers.
- Oil and gas: Incoloy 801 is used for downhole applications, such as sucker rods, subsurface safety valves, and gas lift mandrels.
Incoloy 801 has the following properties:
- High strength and toughness at elevated temperatures
- Excellent resistance to oxidation and carburization
- Good weldability and machinability
- Low thermal expansion coefficient
- Non-magnetic
Incoloy 802
Incoloy 802, also known as UNS Designation N08802, is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with high resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion. It has a maximum operating temperature of 980°C (1800°F) and is commonly used in the following applications:
- Nuclear power: Incoloy 802 is used for reactor core components, such as fuel element spacers, grid plates, and neutron absorbers.
- Chemical processing: Incoloy 802 is used for high-temperature equipment, such as heat exchangers, reactors, and vessels, in corrosive environments containing sulfuric, nitric, hydrofluoric, and phosphoric acid.
- Oil and gas: Incoloy 802 is used for downhole applications, such as wellhead equipment, valves, and tubing hangers, in corrosive and high-pressure environments.
Incoloy 802 has the following properties:
- High strength and toughness at elevated temperatures
- Excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion
- Good weldability and machinability
- Low thermal expansion coefficient
- Non-magnetic
Conclusion
Incoloy 801 and Incoloy 802 are two high-performance alloys used for high-temperature applications in various industries. They have different properties and applications, but both offer excellent resistance to oxidation, corrosion, and high-temperature environments.
